Stockport Young Business of the Year sponsored by the Seashell Trust
During the start of the 2016/17 academic term, Gander partnered with local charity The Seashell Trust to organise a business challenge for students from the three partner colleges of Gander.
Teams were provided with a small amount of seed capital and challenged to maximise their return by coming up with a product or service and then marketing it and making sales in the run up to Christmas.
Seven teams took part and each team was provided with a mentor by Gander, who was able to offer advice on activities such as planning and budgeting, as well as supporting the writing of a business report.
The teams had a range of business ideas including refreshment stalls, film events and mindfulness & relaxation products, and collectively they generated over £800 of profit, which went to support the fantastic work that the Seashell Trust undertake.
The activities culminated in a presentation finale, where each team presented to a panel of judges representing Gander, Seashell Trust, Stockport Council and local businesses.
The winning team, Solarium, came from Aquinas College and they performed strongly across all the categories, having raised over £200 from a series of events in college and out in the wider world.
The judges were impressed by the initiative, commitment and skills shown by all teams – who each made a profit – and felt the business challenge really showcased the abilities of local students.
